A voltage detector is a tool used to check whether high-voltage lines and electrical equipment are live, and it is the most basic safety equipment commonly used in substations. High-voltage voltage detectors generally use glow as an indication signal. Newer high-voltage voltage detectors also use sound or voice as an indication. A high-voltage voltage detector consists of a metal working contact, a small neon bulb, a capacitor, a handle, and other components.
When using an acoustic-optic voltage detector for inspection, the object is generally brought into contact with a metal plate. Once the object is charged, charge will be transferred to the two gold leaves. Since the gold leaves have the same amount of charge and the same type of charge, they will repel each other. Thus, the gold leaves will spread apart. The degree of spreading depends on the amount of charge; the more charge, the larger the angle of spreading. When the object itself is not charged, the gold leaves will not separate.
The following precautions should generally be taken when using an acoustic-optic voltage detector:
(1) A voltage detector suitable for the voltage level of the electrical equipment should be selected, and a lower-voltage voltage detector should not be used to test higher-voltage electrical equipment. It is recommended to use the YDQ series high-voltage acoustic-optic voltage detector produced by Wuhan Dingsheng Electric. It is suitable for voltage testing work at 6kV-220kV voltage levels, and is safe and reliable.
(2) The voltage detector generally should not be grounded. If grounding is necessary, care should be taken to prevent short-circuit accidents caused by the grounding wire.
(3) Before testing, the voltage detector should be calibrated on live equipment to ensure its indication is reliable.
(4) The voltage detector should not be used to directly contact the live parts of electrical equipment; only its working contact should be gradually brought close to the live body until the voltage detector emits sound, light, or other alarm signals.
 (5) The voltage detector should be prevented from being affected by nearby live bodies and giving false signals.
